Re: LCV and Environmental Groups Oppose the Judicial Nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the United States Supreme Court.

Oct 15, 2020

Courtnee Connon, 727-744-4163,

Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) sent a letter from LCV President Gene Karpinski to the U.S. Senate urging members to oppose the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court, adding that we will consider including this vote in LCV’s 2020 National Environmental Scorecard.

As said in the letter: “The idea that a nominee to a lifetime position on the Supreme Court has not developed a view on the existential threat of climate crisis is inexcusable and disqualifying for a position that will have a significant impact on our ability to address climate change. The overwhelming evidence of human-caused climate change is not up for debate, and judges willing to ignore or disregard scientific facts for political purposes are unfit for the bench. Moreover, her response is an insult to those communities on the front lines of climate change, already suffering the effects of extreme weather events and other harms.”

LCV also led an environmental group coalition letter to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee opposing the nomination process. The green groups who signed on are: Alaska Wilderness League, Bold Alliance, Center for Biological Diversity, Clean Water Action, Climate Hawks Vote, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Earthjustice, Endangered Species Coalition, Environmental Advocates NY, Friends of the Earth Action, GreenLatinos, John Muir Project of Earth Island Institute, League of Conservation Voters, Oil Change International, Population Connection Action Fund, Sierra Club, Western Watersheds Project, and The Wilderness Society
