Washington, D.C. — LCV (League of Conservation Voters) and House Majority Forward today launched a $1 million television ad campaign urging constituents to thank eight Members of Congress for their legislative actions and leadership on locally significant environmental issues including combating climate change, banning offshore drilling, and cleaning up toxic chemicals like PFAS.

WATCH:
“Leading” (Rep. Kathy Castor; FL-14)
“Gets It” (Rep. Joe Cunningham; SC-01)
“Hoosick” (Rep. Antonio Delgado; NY-19)
“Highest Concentration” (Rep. Andy Kim; NJ-03)
“Good Work” (Rep. Elaine Luria, VA-02)
“Forever Michigan” (Rep. Elissa Slotkin; MI-08)
“Drinking” (Rep. Abigail Spanberger; VA-07)
“Devastating” (Rep. Xochitl Torres Small; NM-02)

The subjects of the ads are Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14), Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01), Rep. Antonio Delgado (NY-19), Rep. Andy Kim (NJ-03), Rep. Elaine Luria (VA-02), Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), and Rep. Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02). The initial campaign will run for two weeks.

“Poll after poll shows people are demanding action on climate change, clean water and clean air more than ever before,” said Gene Karpinski, president of the League of Conservation Voters. “Fortunately these environmental champions in Congress are responding in big ways by passing legislation and holding polluters accountable. We want their constituents to know about several recent actions where their representatives put the health and safety of people and the planet first so they can thank them and encourage them to keep making progress on these issues.”

“At a time when leadership is in short supply, these Members of Congress are doing the hard work to fight for clean air and water for our families,” said Abby Curran Horrell, executive director of House Majority Forward. “These Members of Congress are taking responsible steps to pass legislation that will strengthen environmental protections and hold big polluters accountable, while also encouraging innovation and the expansion of a clean energy economy.”

In one ad example praising Rep. Andy Kim, who has helped lead the efforts to address toxic PFAS chemicals by co-sponsoring H.R. 535, the PFAS Action Act, and introducing legislation to require the Department of Defense to move away from firefighting foam containing PFAS and to test children living at military facilities for PFAS, the narrator says, “They’re called PFAS — cancer-causing toxics in our air and water. And ‘one of the highest concentrations’ in America is right here in New Jersey. That’s why Andy Kim cosponsored tough new legislation to crack down on PFAS polluters and make them clean up the mess they’ve made. It’s all part of building a better future for our kids and grandkids, with clean water and clean energy. Thank Congressman Kim, and tell him to keep fighting for safe drinking water.”

In another ad praising Rep. Kathy Castor, who has led efforts to address climate change as the Chair of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis by holding hearings to inform climate policy recommendations, passing H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, and calling for the extension of clean energy tax credits, the narrator says in part, “While other politicians stood still on climate change, Castor took charge. Became a national leader. Fought for tax breaks for solar and wind energy. It’s the most urgent issue of our time. Thank Congresswoman Castor and tell her to keep leading the fight for clean energy and climate action.”

During the past year, the House of Representatives, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has taken bold action on a critical set of issues, fighting back against the Trump administration’s dangerous environmental rollbacks and failure to act on the climate crisis. They have held over 100 congressional hearings on the climate crisis, passed the first pro-climate action legislation through the House in a decade, passed the largest public lands bill in a decade, and passed legislation to protect the Arctic Refuge, national monuments, and more.

Most recently, the House passed the PFAS Action Act to finally start taking action on these dangerous chemicals, passed legislation to protect the Atlantic and Pacific coasts from offshore drilling, and introduced critical and bold legislation like the Climate Action Now Act to put us on the path to combat the climate crisis. In addition, many individual members were outspoken advocates for extending vital tax incentives for clean energy.
