WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Deputy Legislative Director Alex Taurel released this statement on the Obama administration’s draft five-year plan for oil and gas development on the Outer Continental Shelf:
“While we appreciate that certain areas of the Arctic Ocean have been put off-limits to drilling, Shell’s alarming failures there in recent years have made clear that Big Oil can’t be trusted to operate safely in such a pristine, remote, and harsh place. We also strongly oppose the plan’s expansion of risky drilling to the Atlantic coast, which threatens the region’s fisheries, beaches, and tourism economies with a devastating oil spill. Our energy policy needs to focus on a transition to clean energy that creates jobs and embraces our moral obligation to address climate change.”
