“We’re not going away, just like the climate crisis is not going away. Climate action leadership at the national level is not going to stop.”
— Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02) on the federal government’s absence at key climate negotiations during COP30 this week.
“The elimination of the GHGRP represents yet another example of the Trump Administration’s censorship of scientific data, while simultaneously threatening statutory obligations, jeopardizing taxpayers’ ability to claim certain energy tax credits, weakening American competitiveness in global markets, and depriving American businesses and investors of the credible data they rely on for decision-making.”
— House Democrats part of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition in a letter to EPA Administrator Zeldin urging him to protect the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP).
“Using federal funds as leverage against communities based on political considerations represents a dangerous abuse of power that undermines public trust and puts lives at risk.”
— Illinois congressional delegates in a letter calling for the release of $3 billion in withheld federal funding to replace toxic lead pipes.
UTAH REJECTS PARTISAN GERRYMANDERING: A Utah judge rejected an extremely gerrymandered proposed congressional districts map drawn by Republicans in the state Legislature and instead, put in place a fairer map. Judge Dianna Gibson ruled that the Legislature’s map violated a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2018 that banned partisan gerrymandering and set neutral criteria for redistricting. This decision is an important win for democracy against partisan gerrymandering.
INDIANA SENATORS REJECT REDISTRICTING PUSH: Indiana senators announced today that they will not redraw the state’s congressional maps, despite pressure from the Trump administration and Republican Governor Mike Braun to do so. Our state league, Indiana Conservation Voters, led the fight against the redistricting push.
ICV TAKE: Indiana Conservation Voters Executive Director Megan Robertson said, “We are grateful that Senate leaders listened to Hoosiers and closed the door on mid-decade redistricting. Families across our state have been clear: they want leaders focused on the real challenges they’re facing every day, not partisan power plays.
“With this distraction behind us, we’re eager to get back to the work that truly matters: making life more affordable, healthier and more secure for families across Indiana.”
ADELITA GRIJALVA SWORN INTO HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: After Speaker Mike Johnson delayed her swearing in for an unprecedented seven weeks, Adelita Grijalva has finally been sworn into Congress representing Arizona’s 7th district. Grijalva will be the first Latina to represent Arizona in Congress, and has committed to tackling the climate crisis, fighting for environmental justice, and protecting our public lands.
LCV ACTION FUND ENDORSES SHERROD BROWN FOR U.S. SENATE: LCV Action Fund announced its endorsement of former Senator Sherrod Brown for election to the U.S. Senate representing Ohio. Brown has played a key leadership role in passing clean energy and climate legislation, and will advocate for creating good-paying, family-sustaining, union clean energy jobs in Ohio and bringing down costs for families across the state.
LCVAF TAKE: LCV Action Fund Vice President of Political Affairs Craig Auster said, “It is critical to have strong clean energy champions like Sherrod Brown in the Senate to protect people and the planet while Trump’s government shutdown and attacks on cheap, fast clean energy is continuing to raise utility costs for families across the country. Sherrod Brown has the experience and proven leadership Ohioans can count on — he will never stop fighting for a clean energy future that helps workers and working families, rebuilds the middle class and brings down costs for everyone.”
PENNSYLVANIA PULLS OUT OF REGIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS INITIATIVE: Governor Josh Shapiro announced the Pennsylvania state budget, which includes exiting the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The decision is a significant setback that will result in a loss of over $1 billion in investments for clean energy that support lowering electricity prices.
CVPA TAKE: Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania Executive Director Molly Parzen said, “The state budget Governor Shapiro announced today represents a devastating, self-inflicted setback in addressing affordability, clean energy and pollution by walking away from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative without establishing an alternative approach. Pennsylvanians should not have to choose between critical social services and lower energy bills — and Governor Shapiro and legislative Democrats should have held the line and rejected that false choice. Their capitulation means that Pennsylvanians will now be robbed of more than $1 billion annually to lower electricity prices through investments in clean energy.
“This decision is even more stunning as it comes a week after Democrats across the nation, including in New Jersey, Virginia and Georgia, achieved record electoral victories by promising to combat skyrocketing energy costs. Policies like an end to utility rate hikes in New Jersey and a commitment to rejoin RGGI in Virginia resonated powerfully with voters. Rather than using these victories as momentum for ongoing negotiations, Governor Shapiro surrendered our most powerful tool to lower energy costs.
“We appreciate that House Democrats successfully secured continued funding for the Solar for Schools program, a win environmental and labor groups have worked hard for over the last few years. Unfortunately, this win does not come close to providing the level or breadth of annual clean energy investments Pennsylvania would have secured from RGGI. Moving forward, Pennsylvania’s working families deserve a laser-like focus on implementing common sense solutions for a clean energy agenda that lowers their electric bills. As Governor Shapiro himself has said about the transition to clean energy, ‘Doing nothing is not an option.’”
