S. 2009. This bill set aside as wilderness 2.3 million acres in the Salmon River watershed in central Idaho, a scenic and forested area rich in wildlife. The vote is on the McClure amendment which designated all other National Forest lands in central Idaho as permanent non-wilderness. This would make them off limits for any future wilderness consideration. Environmentalists felt this set a bad precedent for similar legislation in other areas, thus preempting multiple use planning and management by the Forest Service. The Carter Administration opposed the McClure amendment. November 20, 1979. Rejected 21-67. NO is the correct vote.
