Representative Gary Palmer (R-AL) sponsored H.J.Res. 20, a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution of disapproval, which would repeal the Department of Energy’s energy conservation standards for consumer gas-fired instantaneous water heaters. The CRA is an extreme and blunt tool that is being used by anti-environmental members of Congress who want to permanently strip away protections for our environment, communities, wildlife, and natural heritage. This resolution would block new money-saving efficiency standards, force customers to rely on outdated, inefficient technology, and stall innovation towards better, more efficient products. Efficiency standards for gas appliances relieve stress on pipelines and gas supplies and already tight water supplies, support an industry that employs millions of people in nearly every county, and lead to improved indoor and outdoor air quality and public health, particularly in communities disproportionately impacted by air pollution. On April 10, the Senate approved H.J.Res. 20 by a vote of 53-44. (Senate roll call vote 207) NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The president signed it into law on May 9.
