Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) sponsored an amendment to S.Con.Res. 33, the Republican Senate budget resolution, which would ensure that already-appropriated Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds are actually spent on disaster recovery and mitigation, without political interference. This amendment sought to block the Trump administration from denying FEMA’s support for devastated communities in Democratic-leaning areas and redirecting it to unrelated programs. FEMA provides critical and immediate disaster response to communities and helps build their resilience to future severe weather events. As climate change continues to increase the frequency and exacerbate the impacts of extreme weather events across the country, the fiscally responsible decision is to support the recovery and resiliency of our communities, regardless of political affiliation. On April 23, the Senate rejected the Schiff amendment by a vote of 49-49 (Senate roll call vote 104). YES IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
