Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) sponsored an amendment to H.R. 1, the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which would strike $100 million in additional funding for the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on top of their annual appropriations. This funding would be used to support OMB Director Russell Vought’s anti-environmental deregulatory efforts and his illegal withholding of funds appropriated by Congress meant to clean up our air and water. Vought’s actions undermine checks and balances between Congress and the administration and the implementation of critical federal environmental protections and should not receive additional funding, especially in a bill that seeks to save money by stymying the clean energy economy, selling off our public lands, and cutting funding for clean air protection in schools. On July 1, the Senate rejected the Van Hollen amendment by a vote of 50-50 (Senate roll call vote 368). YES IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The president signed H.R. 1, the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, into law on July 4th.
