The Senate considered President Trump’s nomination of Andrew Oldham to the Fifth Circuit U.S Court of Appeals. Circuit judges are entrusted with protecting the rights of the American people and interpreting the Constitution while withholding personal ideology. Lower court judges often serve as the ultimate authority on justice in highly significant cases with lasting impacts. As Deputy Solicitor General of Texas and General Counsel to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Oldham has been at the forefront of challenging federal environmental protections. Oldham has even questioned the constitutionality of the EPA, calling it “illegitimate.” He has also taken strong stances against immigrant rights and voting rights, supporting challenges to the Voting Rights Act and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). On July 18, the Senate confirmed Oldham to the Fifth Circuit U.S Court of Appeals by a vote of 50-49 (Senate roll call vote 160). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
