National Parks Mining (S 2371). This vote is on Representative Duncan’s amendment to the above bill. Duncan proposed replacing the total ban on Death Valley mining claims with a weaker 4 year moratorium on claims for minerals other than talc (talc would remain permanently banned). This would mean that after 4 years, Death Valley National Monument could once again be open to claims for borates, the mining of which was destructive enough to provoke the original public outcry against mining in Death Valley. September 14, 1976. Rejected 124-240. “NO” is the correct vote.
