H.R. 3454 The vote is on the adoption of the conference report. The Act added 17 new wilderness areas in 10 western states to the National Wilderness Preservation System, protecting 1.3 million acres in Oregon, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Washington. Many of these areas were under pressure from development interests and had been waiting some time for Congress to designate them as wilderness. The most controversial areas were the Kalmiopsis in Oregon and the Golden Trout area in California, both of which contained valuable commercial timber. The Carter Administration supported the bill. Adopted 333-44. February 9, 1978. YES is the correct vote.
