Representative Debbie Dingell (D-MI) sponsored H.R. 2467, the PFAS Action Act of 2021, which would take important steps in addressing the growing national PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) crisis that is threatening the health of millions of people across the country. Also called “forever chemicals” in recognition of their persistence in the environment and our bodies, PFAS are used in many consumer products and industrial applications but have been linked to numerous health problems like certain cancers, thyroid disease, neurological development issues, weakened immune systems, and more. H.R. 2467 would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set a drinking water standard for PFOA and PFOS within two years, designate PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances and air pollutants, set discharge limits of industrial releases of PFAS, prohibit unsafe incineration of PFAS wastes, and require comprehensive PFAS health testing. Additionally, it would have provided $200 million annually to upgrade water infrastructure. On July 21, the House approved H.R. 2467 by a vote of 241-183 (House roll call vote 217). YES IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The Senate took no floor action on this legislation in 2021.
