Representative Pete Stauber (R-MN) sponsored H.J.Res. 140, an illegitimate Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution of disapproval, which attempts to rescind mining protections for the Superior National Forest watershed, upstream of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park in northeastern Minnesota. The CRA is an extreme and blunt tool that is being used by anti-environmental members of Congress who want to permanently strip away protections for our environment, communities, wildlife, and natural heritage. These critical protections were put in place in 2023, safeguarding some of our most visited public lands from irreparable harm from toxic copper-nickel sulfide ore mining planned by a Chilean mining conglomerate. The use of the CRA to unwind a withdrawal and strip these protections from toxic mining would not only cause irreparable harm to the surrounding ecosystems, but would set a dangerous precedent for Congress to target public lands withdrawals as rules under the CRA. Additionally, rolling back these protections ignores the sound science and hundreds of thousands of public comments from across the country that shaped and supported safeguards for this beloved place. On January 21, the House approved H.J.Res. 140 by a vote of 214 – 208 (House roll call vote 38). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
