Representative Cliff Bentz (R-OR) sponsored an amendment to H.R. 7567, the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, also known as the Farm Bill, which would inaccurately and misleadingly label forest biomass burned for electricity as “carbon neutral” or “renewable”. Cutting down trees for biomass energy harms our forests, ecosystems, and climate, while the facilities and plants that burn biomass emit huge amounts of toxic air pollutants like particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, acrolein, and methanol, leading to asthma, cancer, and other respiratory illnesses. These wood-burning plants are disproportionately located near communities of color already overburdened by pollution; tipping the scales in favor of biomass would worsen environmental injustice. On April 30, the House rejected the Bentz amendment by a vote of 210-216, (House roll call vote 144). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
