Representative Andy Levin (D-MI) sponsored an amendment to H.R. 7900, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2023, that would direct the Department of Defense to submit a report to Congress on its progress implementing on-site PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) destruction technologies which don’t require incineration, and it extends the moratorium on PFAS incineration enacted in the Fiscal Year 2022 NDAA. PFAS has been a key ingredient in the firefighting foam that the military uses, as well as many consumer products and industrial applications. These “forever chemicals” persist in the environment and our bodies and have been linked to numerous health problems like certain cancers, thyroid disease, neurological development issues, weakened immune systems, and more. On July 14, the House approved the Levin amendment by a vote of 233-196 (House roll call vote 330). YES IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The Levin amendment was not included in the final NDAA, which the president signed into law on December 23.
