Representative Gabe Evans (R-PA) sponsored H.R. 6387, the so-called Fire Improvement and Reforming Exceptional Events (FIRE) Act, which would overly broaden the Clean Air Act’s definition of exceptional events, considered to be events that are out of the control of a state agency, such as major wildfire smoke blowing across state lines. This legislation would create new opportunities for state and local air quality agencies to inappropriately apply to air pollution problems within their control the existing processes for handling true exceptional events. Covering up controllable, harmful air quality would weaken the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to require clean up of unhealthy levels of air pollution and jeopardize public health across the country. On April 22, the House approved H.R. 6398 by a vote of 220-198 (House roll call vote 136). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
