Representative John James (R-MI) sponsored H.R. 3617, the Securing America’s Critical Minerals Supply Act, a bill that would allow the administration to expand domestic production of critical minerals and fossil fuels without sufficient safeguards. Among other provisions, the bill would create a new, broad term—“critical energy resource”—that could be used to increase the Department of Energy’s (DOE) support of fossil fuel industries and foreign intervention without sufficient regard to environmental damage and energy costs. On February 11, the House approved H.R. 3617 by a vote of 223-206 (House roll call vote 64). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
