The Alaska Pipeline bill (H.R. 9130) to amend Section 28 of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920. The vote is on the Dingell amendment to protect national parks, refuges, and wilderness areas from being opened to pipeline construction. While some environmentalists expected pipeline construction to run through Alaska parks and wildernesses, the bill as written would allow pipeline construction through any park or wilderness in the U.S., even though before prohibited. The President did not take an official position on the amendment. August 2, 1973. Rejected 160-261. Yes is the correct vote.
