Representative Michael Rulli (R-OH) sponsored H.R. 3015, the National Coal Council Reestablishment Act, which would eliminate the Department of Energy’s (DOE) responsibility to reapprove the National Coal Council every two years and instead permanently reauthorize it. The National Coal Council has been used as a government-sanctioned coal industry promotion platform,  providing advice and recommendations to the DOE secretary regarding coal and the coal industry. The Trump-Vance administration has already sought to dramatically increase coal production, including mandating at least 13 million acres of new coal development, selling leases at discounted rates, fast-tracking permit processes, and weakening environmental review under the guise of a “national energy emergency,” all while stifling affordable clean energy production that would actually help lower costs for working families. This bill would effectively further aggrandize this expensive and polluting industry and increase costs for communities while harming our health and worsening climate change. On September 18, the House approved H.R. 3015 by a vote of 217-209 (House roll call vote 278). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
