Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 (H.R. 13002). The vote is on passage of a bill to give EPA authority to set national standards for safe drinking water to prevent waterborne disease outbreaks and chemical contamination. From 1961-1970, the U.S. Public Health Service reported over 46,000 illnesses and 20 deaths resulting from unsafe drinking water. Many scientists believe that carcinogens such as those found in New Orleans and Cincinnati may well prove to be widespread, since over 90% of municipal water systems are not designed to filter out toxic chemicals and viral pollutants. The President opposed the bill. November 19, 1974. Passed 296-83. YES is the correct vote.
