Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) sponsored H.R. 845, the so-called Pet and Livestock Protection Act, which would undermine the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and remove ESA protections for the gray wolf, commonly referred to as delisting. The gray wolf is an iconic keystone species that plays a vital role in keeping America’s ecosystems healthy and has reduced costly vehicle-animal crashes across its re-established range. Before receiving ESA protections, gray wolves were nearly wiped out by decades of habitat and prey loss, hunting, and ‘predator control’ programs. Although they have begun to make a comeback due in large part to effective ESA protections, they remain far from recovered, and removing protections provided by the ESA could be premature and prove to be devastating for gray wolf populations. Legislatively delisting wolves also defies decades of scientific research, and undermines a federal district court’s decision that a previous delisting decision was unlawful. On December 18, the House approved H.R. 845 by a vote of 211-204 (House roll call vote 360). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The Senate took no action on this legislation in 2025.
