Chair Bruce Westerman (R-AR) sponsored H.R. 471, the so-called Fix our Forests Act, which, under the guise of addressing wildfire concerns, would open millions of acres of federal land for logging without thorough scientific review and community input. The bill would roll back bedrock environmental laws, remove Endangered Species Act (ESA) consultation requirements, and circumvent National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) processes on millions of acres of federal public lands. It would stifle public input and also diminish the public’s rights to judicial review for potentially damaging projects, including shortening the review period after public notice to just 120 days. On January 23, the House approved H.R. 471 by a vote of 279-141 (House roll call vote 25). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The full Senate took no action on this legislation in 2025.
