Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) offered an amendment to H.R. 5538, the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2017, which would undermine the EPA’s authority to protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which spans six states and the District of Columbia. These states and the EPA have committed to protecting the 64,000 square mile watershed through the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement, a collaborative agreement that establishes state-specific plans with the goal of restoring the Bay, its tributaries, and the lands around them. The EPA’s authority to hold states accountable to their plans is critical to ensuring full Clean Water Act protections for over 18 million residents of the watershed and succeeding in finally restoring this important waterbody. On July 13, the House approved the Goodlatte amendment by a vote of 231-197 (House roll call vote 446). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
