Representative Don Young (R-AK) offered an amendment to H.R. 5538, the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2017, which would block the implementation of the Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Rather than acceding to the oil industry’s wishes to industrialize and drill this majestic landscape, Congress should follow the advice of the Fish and Wildlife Service and allow it to continue implementing its Comprehensive Conservation Plan. The agency released this document in 2015 following extensive scientific study and public input. The plan recognizes the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s unparalleled wild character and recommends its coastal plain—as well as other areas within the refuge—receive the highest level of protection. On July 13, the House approved the Young amendment by a vote of 237-191 (House roll call vote 460). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
