Agriculture Appropriations bill (HR 9270). The vote is on the Reuss amendment to prohibit the use of funds to start new stream channelization projects. Channelization turns natural streams into relatively sterile ditches, destroying fish and wildlife habitats and increasing flooding downstream. The Reuss amendment did not affect projects already under construction. The White House took no position. (Rejected 129-278. June 23, 1971. “Yes” is the correct vote.)
